Robert C. Thompson

Robert Chalmer Thompson, Jr., Mayor of Callaway, Florida passed away on Saturday May 26, 2012. He was a native of Circle Hill, Ohio and resided in Bay county for 28 years prior to his death.

“Bob” was appointed by Mayor Greg Brudnicki of Panama City to the Community Resource Center Task Force in summer 2011. He was an active member of the Task Force and was Co-Chair of the Veterans Committee and the Resource Development Committee Co-Chair. Bob was a tireless advocate , working diligently to assist those in need and to speak out for the causes he believed in. He fervently supported the Community Resource Center understanding the assistance it will offer to his beloved Veterans community.

He dedicated his life to the service of his country and his community. Bob Served 21 years in the Air Force during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. After retiring from his military career, he and his wife Reeda moved to Callaway, Florida where they lived for 28 years until his death. Bob loved karaoke and being with his family.  He was  Methodist by faith.

Bob remained very patriotic and actively involved with many Veterans’ organizations. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 17, VFW Post #8205, AMVETS Post #2298 and the American Legion Post #356. Bob was a founding member of the Veterans Council of Bay County. He was a driving force in creating the Veterans Memorial at Aaron Bessant Park. He also formed the National Association for Uniformed Services (NAUS), Florida Chapter 10 and served five years on their National Board of Directors. Bob always provided support and assistance to the SIMS Nursing Home where many Veterans reside.

In addition to championing Veterans’ causes, Bob was active in his local government. He was a member of the Callaway Citizens Advisory Committee. He was a founding member of the Bay Patriots Organization. He was elected Mayor of the City of Callaway in 2012. He was serving as Callaway’s Mayor at the time of his death.

Bob is greatly missed as the Task Force moves forward with our work. He has inspired us to renew our efforts and our own commitment to make this dream come true.
